Prevention Program Activities Funded by the State Department of Health

Healthy Heart Program

Through Healthy Heart Program funding, the United Health Services Hospital has worked in a variety of community settings to increase opportunities for physical activity and access to healthy foods. Interventions include:

  • Implementing a walking program (BC Junior Walks) and increasing healthy options in the cafeteria through the Rock On Café in schools;
  • Implementing BC Walks (a walking promotion for middle-aged adults);
  • Working on creating complete streets, where facilities are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users. Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities are able to safely move along and across a complete street.

Diabetes Prevention and Control Program

The Southern Tier Diabetes Coalition, led by the Broome County Department of Health, is one of 15 regional Community Coalitions for Diabetes Prevention funded by the Diabetes Prevention and Control Program. The coalitions provide community-based programming for the prevention of diabetes and its complications. In addition to hosting educational events focused on nutrition, physical activity and diabetes management, the coalitions engage in education for health care providers working with people with or at risk for diabetes and promote policy, systems, and environmental change. Examples of changes include expanding walking trails, including healthy choice foods and beverages in vending machines, and offering flex time for employees to take longer walks during their lunchtime.

Tioga County is one of four counties represented in the coalition’s catchment area. Partners include the Tioga County Health Department and other community-based organizations. The coalition offers diabetes prevention programs for individuals at risk for developing diabetes in this rural area, develops public services announcements, and promotes the use of fitness trails to encourage residents to be more physically active.

WIC

The Tioga Opportunities Program, Inc. administers the WIC Program, serving approximately 1,400 women, infants and children in Tioga County each month. WIC has implemented a number of obesity prevention initiatives, including breastfeeding support, Fit WIC physical activity training for parents, patient-centered nutrition education, low-fat milk promotion, and the new WIC food package which includes vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and non-fat and low-fat milk.

Eat Well Play Hard in Child Care Settings

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), a nutrition and meal reimbursement program for day care homes, day care centers and after school programs provides a grant to the Family Enrichment Network, Inc. in Johnson City, to implement Eat Well Play Hard in Child Care Settings in Tioga County. Since July 2008 staff, children and parents in four low-income child care centers have been provided with nutrition education, obesity prevention, and physical activity interventions. This program will be implemented in one additional child care center prior to May 31, 2009.

Increasing Access to Healthy Foods in the Emergency Food Network

Through the Hunger and Nutrition Assistance Program and the Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables Nutrition Education Program, emergency food recipients have increased availability of healthy foods like fresh produce and 1% or fat free milk, and an increased knowledge of how to prepare these foods. Last year, more than $82,000 worth of fresh produce and 1% or fat free milk was made available to emergency food relief organizations in the Food Bank of the Southern Tier region which covers six counties. In addition, 1,099 individuals participated in 82 nutrition education workshops in the Food Bank of the Southern Tier region last year.
