Technical Notes for the Hospital Maternity-Related Procedures and Practices Statistics

The percentages were computed after records containing no information in a category were removed from the denominator. The numbers under the Method of Calculation refer to the number of the row containing the data, and a "/" signifies division. Therefore, 23 / (1-30) means the number of C-Sections (row 23) is divided by the number of total live births (row 1) from which the number of records missing method of delivery (row 30) has been subtracted.

For the last three years, 2004 - 2006, we were not able to accurately report Primary and Repeat Cesarean Section data and the number of Vaginal Births after Cesarean Section (VBACs) for all Upstate New York Hospitals. Beginning in 2007 several changes were made to the web based live birth registration system to correct this problem. Therefore we are presenting these three fields again within the Maternity Information Brochure. But please keep in mind that the first year of any new change may result in some under reporting of repeat cesarean sections and VBACS. We are monitoring this situation closely with the hospitals and continue to emphasize how important it is for each hospital staff to enter accurate and complete data into the Birth Registration system. In addition "low forceps" and "outlet forceps" are now one category for Non-New York City Hospitals.

Data were tabulated from the certificates of live birth completed in the hospital in 2007.
