State Health Commissioner Novello Announces More than $721,000 to Fight Alzheimer's Disease
ALBANY, NY, October 21, 2005 - State Health Commissioner Antonia C. Novello, M.D., M.P.H., Dr.P.H. today announced that more than $721,000 in grant funding has been awarded to 19 community-based organizations across New York State to provide essential support services to families and caregivers of New Yorkers living with Alzheimer's disease.
The funding announced today will help ensure that the more than 330,000 New Yorkers living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias are cared for in their communities for as long as possible. The support services offered through these community-based programs include caregiver training, respite care, educational materials and referral services.
"With the continuing growth in New York's aging population, we must continue to support programs that will assist individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia," said Dr. Novello. "These initiatives build on Governor Pataki's vision to create greater opportunities for New Yorkers to receive the long-term care and services they need in their own communities as an alternative option to nursing home care."
Neal E. Lane, Director of the New York State Office for the Aging said, "These supportive services are absolutely critical to the individuals and families across the state who struggle to cope with these progressively debilitating diseases. These projects also provide a life-line to case managers and discharge planners across the state who often seek links to these critical services for the people in their care."
Alzheimer's, the most common form of dementia, is a neuro-psychiatric disorder that attacks an individual's central nervous system causing a loss of perception and memory. Additionally, Alzheimer's disease is a permanent, life-threatening condition.
