SCIPIN-L Available on Healthcom Network
The New York State Health Department's Disability and Health Program has an electronic discussion forum (Listserv) on its Healthcom Network. The listserv, "SCIPIN-L" or Spinal Cord Injury Peer Information Network, is the creation of the workgroup on the Prevention of Pressure Sores and Urinary Tract Infections in Persons with Spinal Cord Injury. The workgroup has learned from individuals with spinal cord injury that some of the most useful information they receive is from their peers. Given ever increasing access to the "Information Superhighway" and individual ownership of personal computers (PC) and modems, availability of a listserv provides an effective mechanism by which consumers and other interested individuals can share their thoughts and ideas.
Anyone who currently has access to the Internet through a commercial package, such as America Online or Compuserve, may subscribe to SCIPIN-L by sending an e-mail message to: LISTSERV@health.state.ny.us. In the body of the message type "subscribe scipin-l your name" (do not include quotation marks). If you have a PC and a modem, the department has free software called PCMAIL that will provide you with an e-mail account, and enable you to subscribe to SCIPIN-L. Contact the State Health Department's HEALTHCOM Network Support for further information at 1-800/638-3808.
SCIPIN-L will provide consumers and other interested individuals with a fast, easy way to share problems and solutions. The Disability and Health Program will try to provide a helpful and supportive environment for discussion of issues related to health and wellness for individuals with spinal cord injury, including preventing secondary conditions, access to services and consumer and professional education needs.
