New York State EMS Council Annual Awards
Annually the New York State Emergency Medical Services Council presents awards in several catagories. These awards are presented at the Vital Sign's Conference each fall.
Awards are presented as follows:
Basic Life Support Provider of the Year
Criteria: Contribution by an individual to the community as a Certified First Responder (CFR) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Dedication, responsibility, professional behavior, ingenuity, special skill or insight in the EMS environment.
Eligibility: NYS Certified CFR or EMT.
Advanced Life Support Provider of the Year
Criteria: Contribution by an individual to the community as an Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate (EMT-I), EMT-Critical Care Technician (EMT-CC), or Paramedic (EMT-P). Dedication, responsibility, professional behavior, ingenuity, special skill or insight in the EMS environment.
Eligibility: NYS Certified EMT-I, EMT-CC, EMT-P.
EMS Agency of the Year
Criteria: Any agency which strives for consistency in EMS exellence and exhibits exemplary performance when providing prehospital emergency medical care.
Eligibility: A NYS certified volunteer or career EMS agency, i.e., NYS certified ambulance service, fire department, police department, hospital emergency department, EMS council, dispatch organization, first responder unit.
Harriet C. Weber EMS Leadership Award
Critera: Longevity, innovation/dedication, responsibility, executive and management skills in establishing, maintaining, promoting or expanding EMS organizations, agencies, committees at the community and/or state level.
Eligibility: EMS Agency leader; local, county, regional, state EMS leader; medical/nursing/or career EMS leader.
EMS Educator of Excellence
Criteria: Individual who through outstanding teaching, educational administration/coordination, publication or research has maximally improved prehospital services at the local, county, regional or state level.
Eligibility: EMS Educator or equivalent
EMS Communications Specialist of the Year
Criteria: Contributions to the EMS community as a call receiving operator, dispatcher or call taker. Dedication, responsibility, professional behavior, ingenuity, special skill or insight to prehospital communications.
Eligibility: Employed or volunteer with an organized dispatch center in New York State.
Registered Professional Nurse of Excellence
Criteria: Contributions to the EMS community as a NYS registered professional Nurse. Dedication, responsibility, professional behavior, ingenuity, special skill or insight in the prehospital environment.
Eligibility: New York State licensed registered professional nurse serving within the EMS System.
Physician of Excellence
Critera: Contributions to the EMS community as a physician. Dedication, responsibility, professional behavior, ingenuity, special skill or insight in the prehospital environment.
Eligibility: NYS licensed physcian serving an EMS system.
Commissioner of Health's Award of Excellence in EMS Activities
Criteria: Exceptional contribution to EMS activities by an individual in any way.
Eligibility: May be nominated for any other award in the same year. Need not be nominated by a regional council. This award may not be given every year. The Commissioner of Health will determine the process of selection.
Selection for this award will be made by the Commissioner.

New York State EMS Council Annual Awards Rules and Regulations
Applications for these awards may be based on a pattern of activities that have culminated in a significant improvement of the Emergency Medical Services System in the region. The application may also be based on a single unusual event that was beyond ordinary duty. Each application must be clearly and completely documented to be considered. Where individual events are cited, they must be documented in detail giving times, places, description of event, names of witnesses, etc. Applications for a pattern of activities must be all inclusive providing details of activities, dates and describing the specific impact that the individual has had on EMS in their region. Applications recognizing a single event must be based on that event occurring in the calendar year 2005.
All applications for the New York State EMS Council Annual Awards must be submitted on the application provided (see below). No attachments will be accepted. THE APPLICATION FORM MUST BE TYPE WRITTEN to be considered. All materials submitted will become the property of the New York State EMS Council, cannot be returned and may be used in subsequent public announcements.
Each individual can be considered for only one award category annually and the nominees must be submitted to the State Council by the Regional Council. EACH REGIONAL COUNCIL MAY SUBMIT ONLY ONE CANDIDATE IN EACH OF THE EIGHT CATEGORIES. NOMINATIONS SIGNED BY THE REGIONAL COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON MUST BE POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN AUGUST 1 OF EACH YEAR TO BE CONSIDERED BY THE NYS-EMS COUNCIL.
The Public Information, Education and Relations Committee of the NYS-EMS Council will select a single candidate in each category who will be recognized at the Annual New York State "Vital Signs" EMS Conference in the fall.
