Occupational Health Surveillance Program
Fundamental Occupational Health Surveillance
Since 2000, with support from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, efforts have been expanded to use existing databases to describe the occupational health picture in NYS.
What are the Occupational Health Indicators?
In conjunction with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), 19 Occupational Health Indicators that describe the occupational health status of the US working population have been developed. These are collected by state occupational health programs in a uniform and consistent manner. These indicators have been calculated for NYS since 2000 and are available from CSTE
Can these Indicators be Used to Describe Occupational Health Status in My County?
Where possible, these indicators have been examined on a county-level as part of the County Health Assessment Indicators (CHAIs)
Is There a Way to Prioritize the Occupational Health Issues in NYS?
An occupational injury/illness priority index has been created using NYS hospital discharge data and US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Numeric ranks for the number of cases and incidence rates were calculated and sorted in ascending order. NYS Occupational Injury/Illness Priority Index (PDF, 188KB, 43pp.)
