Hudson River Fish Advisory Outreach Project

Public Service Announcements

In summer 2008, NYSDOH placed public service announcements in a number of papers in the Hudson Valley to let readers know about the Hudson River fish advisory and how to get more information.

The New York State Department of Health developed radio spots:

Here's an important message about protecting your family. If you like to catch fish from the Hudson River, you need to know that many of the fish contain chemicals and may be harmful to eat. Kids under the age of 15 and women who can have children need to be especially careful. Knowing how much fish is OK to eat and knowing how to clean and cook the fish can make a difference. Get the facts on fish - call the New York State Health Department at 1-800-458-1158.

60-second spot

Here's an important message about protecting your family. If you like to catch fish from the Hudson River, you need to know that many of the fish contain chemicals and may be harmful to eat. The chemicals build up in your body over time and may be a problem for developing babies and children.

Some fish have higher levels of chemicals than other fish. The water can look clean and the fish can look healthy and chemicals can still be in the fish. You can reduce the amount of some chemicals by removing the skin, trimming the fat and broiling, baking or poaching the fish. No one should eat more than one meal of fish each week from the Hudson River, and some fish, you should eat even less. Generally, kids under age 15 and women who can have children shouldn't eat any Hudson River fish. To get a copy of a booklet with advice about eating fish from all New York waters, call the New York State Health Department at 1-800-458-1158. That's 1-800-458-1158.
