WTC Responder Fatality Investigations

The New York State Department of Health is the data collection center for information on deaths among WTC responders, recovery workers and volunteers, regardless of how or why the death occurred. This data collection system will be used to identify and track all fatalities that occur among WTC responders so that science-based investigations of root causes can begin to be explored.

Through March 2008, our outreach efforts have led to the identification of 329 people who worked at the WTC site and have subsequently died. For each death identified, death certificates, medical records, autopsy results, employment information and WTC exposure information is collected. Confirmed causes of death are identified from death certificates, autopsies and/or medical records. To date the program has confirmed 128 causes of death. This information will be updated quarterly.

In order to get an accurate assessment of deaths occurring among the WTC workers and volunteers, it is necessary to have all deaths among this group reported to our program, regardless of cause. To report a death, please contact us at (518) 402-7900 or toll-free in New York State at 1-866-807-2130 or by email at wtcfatality@health.state.ny.us.
